Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida has been a popular vacation destination since it opened in 1971. Visitors from around the world flock there for its many hotels, restaurants, and, of course, theme parks.
Disney World is made up of four theme parks and two water parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Each park has something unique to offer, although the Magic Kingdom, with its iconic Cinderella Castle, is the most visited. Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Cinderella regularly roam the parks and offer visitor meet-and-greet and photo opportunities.
The Magic Kingdom features many smaller areas for visitors to enjoy. They include Main Street, U.S.A., the jungle-themed Adventureland, Frontierland, Mickey’s Toontown Fair, and Tomorrowland. Popular rides in the Magic Kingdom include the Haunted Mansion, SpaceMountain, and the child-friendly Dumbo the Flying Elephant.
Epcot was originally known as the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, and subsequently has a futuristic theme. In addition to normal rides and attractions, Epcot features the World Showcase, which highlights the culture and food of 11 countries. Countries of the World Showcase include Japan, Morocco, France, China, and Germany. Epot is home to Soarin’, a popular ride that simulates a ride over California, including a smell of fresh oranges.
Animal Kingdom is Disney’s newest theme park, opening in 1998. While the focus is on animals, the park is more than a zoo. One unique feature is its themed areas, specifically areas for Africa and Asia, which include fictional villages visitors can explore.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the place for movie lovers. Because of the movie theme of the park, most attractions there have a movie theme, too. Some movies featured include Toy Story, Beauty and the Beast, Indiana Jones, and the Little Mermaid.
After all the rides and character meeting, it makes sense that Disney visitors might be a little hungry. Luckily, Disney has an abundance of food on hand. Each theme park has a variety of restaurants, both sit-down and fast food. At some restaurants, Disney offers a unique dining experience – character meals. What child wouldn’t want to eat a meal and have Mickey Mouse or Winnie the Pooh stop by to say hello? Be aware that character meals are popular so they often sell out and should be booked as early as possible in advance.
Travelers visiting the parks obviously need a place to take a break or get a little rest. Some Disney hotels cater to both children and the budget traveler – Pop Century, All-Star Sports, All-Star Movies, and All-Star Music. Some hotels are on Disney property but not operated by Disney, such as Hilton and Doubletree. Although close in proximity to the parks, hotel guests don’t enjoy the perks of a Disney-owned property, such as Disney transportation or extra hours in the parks.
Those looking to spend more money on a hotel (and receive more amenities) may enjoy one of Disney’s Deluxe resorts. In addition to regular hotel rooms, Deluxe resorts offer expensive suites and a concierge option. Disney’s Deluxe resorts are Beach Club, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Boardwalk Inn, Contemporary, Yacht Club, Wilderness Lodge, Polynesian, and Grand Floridian.
If travelers don’t mind the commute to Disney each day, the Orlando area offers hundreds of options that aren’t far from the parks. Buena Vista Suites and the Marriott Village are two popular options. Many off-site hotels offer some type of transportation to the parks, and might be a good idea if one doesn’t want to be surrounded by Disney magic 24 hours a day.
The Orlando area has a lot to offer to those who want to spend some time away from Disney. Other theme parks in the area include SeaWorld, Gatorland, and Universal Studios. Each offers a distinctly different experience than Walt Disney World. The state of Florida, overall, has many outdoor activities to take part in as well. Fishing, swimming, and boating are just a few options available in the Orlando area.
One important consideration to make when planning a Disney vacation is the time of year. Disney’s prices vary and so do crowds. Historically it’s been best to visit Disney World during the months of January-February and early May. The worst (and hottest) times include June through August; holidays should also be avoided if one wants the parks least crowded.
With careful planning and good knowledge of the area, an Orlando vacation can be fun and exciting – whether it includes a trip to Walt Disney World or not.
