Key West Lodging - Information

Lodging on this tropical island has quite a broad range of style and types. Some of the most unique in the world by far. Offering the expected resorts and luxury hotels you might find in most major tourist destinations, the island has a large number of guesthouses and unique bed and breakfast type inns. Many are historic in nature and offer a very unique lodging experience you won't find in other resort or beach towns. People who travel and stay away from home for more than a day need lodging mainly for sleeping. There is so much activity on the island that most vacationers don't spend a lot of time in their rooms anyway. This fact doesn't keep local owners from making their properties some of the most wonderfully decorated accommodations around. Other purposes of lodging are safety, shelter from cold and rain, having a place to store luggage and being able to take a shower. They do that in a hotel, hostel, a private home (commercially, i.e. a bed and breakfast or guest house place, or non-commercially, with members of hospitality services or in the home of friends), in a tent, caravan/camper (often on a campsite). In addition there are make-shift solutions. During some special events on the island it is not too uncommon to see people sleeping in their cars. This is a result of the numbers of vacations traveling without any prior reservations. They travel south and figure on finding a room at a reasonable rate when they arrive. This is done only to find that the event they have come for is very popular and there is no lodging to be able to reserve. Not wanting to drive all the way home, and stay for all the festivities of the special event, they camp out in their cars. Many times vacationers will travel in a large motor home or RV with the plan of simply parking the vehicle in a public parking lot of a local shopping center. This practice is illegal and this law is now more heavily enforced. Parking in town and taking up a couple of parking spots is also against local laws. There are a few areas designated for these vehicles up the keys, but overnight parking is very difficult to find and not readily available. It is always a good idea to plan ahead and make reservations, no matter what choice in lodging you might make. Sleeping is typically done lying in a bed, or more generally on a soft surface, such as also an air mattress, a couch, etc. Some trains have sleeping cars. Sometimes people sleep sitting, because lying is not possible, e.g. in a train (if not in a sleeping car), a bus, a seat in a waiting room, a bench on the street or in a park, etc. Inclinable seats allow something between sitting and lying. Whether lying on a row of seats is possible and comfortable depends e.g. on the presence of arm rests, and whether they can be moved up. In some public places lying would be possible but is not permitted.
